One that comes to mind, I was invited to David Garrards (quarterback for the Jacksonville Jaguars from 02’-10’) house to deal a private poker game.  Fred Taylor, Maurice Jones Drew, Josh Scobee, and a few other classic players were in attendance. Towards the end of the night, Garrard, or wasn’t much of a poker player, took me to the side to teach me an old family card game that he loves and we played it for an hour or two while the other players were finishing up their game.  They were all very accommodating and a great group of people.

By the end of the night, they were all professionals at playing and dealing

  1. Name: Kevin Muckian
  2. How long you have been dealing games: 2 years
  3. What is your favorite game to deal: I enjoy dealing all of the games GSH offers but my favorite is craps. When a hot shooter is up and every player around the table is winning the energy becomes contagious.
  4. What is something you hear most from guests at events: What I hear quite frequently from new players, in particular, is how they never realized how much fun gambling could be.
  5. What is your favorite story from an event: While dealing blackjack at a show in Springfield, one guest was dead-set on beating the dealer. The guest followed my advice all night long resulting in ebbs and flows of winning and losing. Time was nearing an end and so was the guest’s patience with my basic strategy tips. She placed the maximum bet down and I dealt the hand. The player had a 16 while the dealer was showing a 14. Normally the ‘blackjack bible’ would advise the player to stay. Not this player. “Hit me!” she said. I asked, “Are you sure?” The player confidently starred me in the eyes and responded, “Yes. I want to beat the dealer”. A “five” card came her way to make 21! She went on to max bet the following 5-6 hands all of which resulted in wins, and the woman who wanted to beat the dealer took home the grand prize.

  1. Name: Randy Brickman
  2. How long you have been a dealer: With GSH about four or five years.
  3. What is your favorite game to deal: 1st: Craps, 2nd: Blackjack
  4. What is something you hear most from guests at events: Especially on Craps, that they have no idea of how to play or are a bit intimidated by the number of players and the loudness of a full table. That is when we are at our best walking the new or inexperienced players through the basics of the game. Almost always will the guest leave with a greater understanding and confidence.
  5. What is your favorite story from an event:  At a private house party we had a woman that clearly fit into the category of new and a bit nervous at the craps table. After about 20 minutes or so of continuous play, she was feeling very comfortable and clearly showing that she was having a great time playing.  As the game progresses and the dice moved to the other end, thus the stick was at my end, I decided to involve her into the action a little more by bringing her over to my spot as the dealer. I then handed her the stick and had her perform the functions that I did while I moved over to her table spot. At first, she was surprised by the request but quickly decided that this was fun, I assisted her with the payouts and other activities so as not to be overwhelmed. This continued until it was time to hand the stick off to my partner. In the end, the joke was on me as she was having too much fun and did not want to relinquish the stick.  As this was a private party, the woman and the other players were all friends so great encouragement was offered by all and everyone became part of the action.
